|The goal of marital counseling and couple's therapy is to better understand communication and relationship patterns within a
couple's relationship in order to develop more positive and emotionally healthy relationships and patterns of interaction.
Frequently this will involve looking at communication patterns, as well as examining the individual needs of both persons within
the relationship and how these needs may or may not be communicated and met by the other.
Issues that may need to be addressed include how to better deal with conflict, children and other family members, the couple’s
sexual relationship, or their ability to deal with spiritual or emotional intimacy.
As with other forms of therapy, the specific goals will need to be evaluated and decided upon by the couple with clarification and
input from the therapist. We want your treatment to fit you and your relationship needs.
We offer one-part and three-part evaluations (see below). We also offer intensives for our patients who live out of the area or
travel frequently, making weekly or bi-weekly appointments an extreme challenge

It is imperative that all forms be completed prior to the
appointment, otherwise appointment time will need to be used
for you to complete them.
Therapist will review your forms prior to meeting with you. If
you have not faxed or dropped off the forms prior to the day or
your appointment, or if you have not arrived 15 minutes early the
day of your appointment, this review will occur during the early
minutes of your session.
Initial Evaluations generally last up to 90 minutes. This will
include reviewing the current state of the relationship, some
history of the relationship, and brief information on backgrounds
of each of the partners.
Some couples will require more time for various reasons such as
a couple in crisis, complex history or presenting problems, forms
have not been provided or completed prior to the appointment,
etc. Fees for the appointment will include an increase to cover
the extended time.
Before your appointment is concluded, your therapist will give
you her impression and treatment recommendations. Then
together you will agree upon a treatment plan.
A relationship can not have a diagnosis and therefore many
insurance companies - even those who provide benefits for
marital counseling - will not reimburse if the relationship alone
is "the patient". Check with your insurer to find out you own

The three-part evaluation consists of a Relationship Evaluation and
Individual Evaluations on each of the partners. There are many
benefits to this approach at the beginning of treatment.
From a clinical standpoint, it gives your therapist a better
understanding of each partner and how he/she has come to the
relationship and contributed to its development over time.
From a practical standpoint, when the partners have individual
evaluations with specific diagnoses, insurance companies that have
benefits for marital counseling are more likely to reimburse when
submitted under the individual diagnosis. When they define a specific
number of visits covered, each patient is entitled to that number of
visits. Having both partners evaluated doubles the number of visits
available. Check with your insurer to find out if this would benefit you.
We start with the Relationship Evaluation, which generally last up to
90 minutes. This will include a more intense focus on the current state
of the relationship, any events leading up to or causing the current
issue, and each partner's input into what they would like to accomplish
in counseling. There will be time to review the history of the
The next two appointments will be individual evaluations for each
partner. At the end of the appointment, the therapist will discuss any
recommendations relative to coordinating individual therapy with the
The appointment following the three-part evaluation will be with the
couple together again and will begin as a collaborative treatment
planning session for future appointments. Once the treatment plan is
established, the session will flow into beginning therapy.
For couples wanting to "jump start" treatment, we can do all 4
appointments in a one day intensive. This is particularly helpful for
those couples where one or both partners travel for work. Because of
the amount of time involved, intensives require prepayment and a full
two week's notice to change.
